Rialto Beach, Olympic National Park, Washington State. The trees that grow inland are enormous. The Douglas Fir, Sitka Spruce, and Western Red Cedar are among the giant tree species that thrive in the park. Giant trees make for giant driftwood, making this beach seem surreal.
In 2017 I spent two weeks in Kathmandu and the Annapurna Mountain Reserve Region. Tradition, religion, the caste system, poverty, and density combine to form a rich texture that is unique to the Indian subcontinent. In general, I found the people of Nepal to be wonderfully open and happy.
This set of photos was taken days after my mother perished in a fire. They're taken from inside her destroyed house. The long exposures are meant to convey how she must have felt in her last seconds. The still photos - the aftermath.
I spent four days in the Sahara watching this man create a house from scratch. I was at a desert camp, and there was nowhere to go, as there were no cars. There was no distraction, as there was no wi-fi and I'd finished my book. Walking too far away from camp was out, as flies covered you head to toe in the "season of the flies." So I meditated and watched this man build.

In Morocco, erg is the name for a sand sea, or a sea of dunes. This particular sand sea is called Erg Chigaga. It's a sand sea on the far West side of the Sahara. The desert is full of colors and is always changing.
Essaouria, Morocco, has a beautiful port in the old town. When I visited it was a very hot, and the local kids played chase and took turns diving into the water.
I found these tree remains near my camp in Erg Chigaga, Morocco. The sun and wind are harsh in the Saharah; these deformed remains show their effect over time.
On my way up to the Mardi Himal basecamp, I stopped in many of the hillside villages. Life is simple there. People live the way they have for thousands of years, using only simple curved knives for cutting crops and wicker baskets to carry product back to the village center.
Rice is the main crop in the foothills. If you're in these villages at the right time of year, at the right time of day, when the sun is out, the fields almost glow.
This canyon in Big Bend is made of a rock called tuff, which compared to other rocks, is relatively soft. Over the centuries water easily eroded the rock down into the formations that we can see today.
The Heart O' Texas Speedway features short track stock car racing. It's a photogenic atmosphere, with locals enjoying a casual night out close to the cars.
Big Bend National Park is a 1,252 square mile chunk of Southern Texas. It is full of rich textures due to its wide range of plant life and its complex geological past. Over the years I've tried to capture some of these textures.
I bought my first DSLR in 2008 for my trip to Japan. Tokyo, with its roughly 38 million inhabitants, is a photographer's dream. A highlight for me was the Tsukji fish market, the largest wholesale seafood market in the world. An early wake-up put me next to master craftsmen at work.
Saturday night at the Continental Club Gallery. Black Red Black, led by the trumpeter Ephraim Owens, plays a mix of originals as well as Miles, Mingus, and Horace Silver covers. The energetic and at times dissonant music inspired soft focus and long exposure shots.
